Climbing Pikes Peak

In march of 1984, My best friend and I decided to conquer a mountain. We were going to climb the 14,000 foot mountain, Pikes Peak. This task wasn't as daunting as it sounds. We lived at 10,000 feet. The climb is steep, but no special gear is required. We expected the climb to only last the day. Actually we expected to be home an hour or so before sunset.A day pack each with water and some food.We were dressed warm as it was still chilly and a 4,000 foot increase would only get colder. We started early that morning. Long before dawn, so that we could actually get to the base and begin the climb at daybreak. At about 10am the blue skies began to get clouded over. Nothing to worry about. At 2pm we were 3/4 the way up. The wind had picked up and the temperature was dropping quickly. We found a small, protected ledge about four feet wide and eight feet long. About the size of a sheet of plywood. We were able to get out of the wind somewhat. After eating a quick lunch, we decided to head home. The wind had picked up considerably, and the temperature was falling rapidly. We needed to weigh our options. We weren't prepared for an overnight trip, much less one on the side of Pike's Peak. However, The wind and cold temperatures would make the climb down extremely dangerous.

While we didn't need climbing gear, there were some 10-12 foot verticle climbs. Cold hands could make that tough. The snow that began falling made the decision for us. Snow and ice would get us killed. We sat back up against that cold chunk of rock that blocked most of the wind and snow, pulled out our little silver thermal blankets and hunkered down for the absolute worst 18 hours of our young lives.Dave and I had often disappeared into the mountianous wilderness for days at a time. No one would worry about us for days. Throughout the evening and into the night we slept huddled next to each other under our two blankets, because there was no way other way to stay warm. by daybreak, Dave and I were shivering so badly that we couldn't fold the blankets into the little squares. We ended up shoving them into our packs. The winds had died down at about 4am and the snow stopped at about 5am. We got about a foot of snow overnight. From 5 am till dawn, we tried to get warm by whatever exercises we could do in that limited space. We warmed enough to be able to negotiate our way down the mountain and by noon we were walking up the hill to my house. Nobody was home and nobody missed us. We slept for a few hours after taking HOT showers and eating some soup. We never tried that climb again. Shame. I regret not trying that climb again.

I was recently asked by one of my students if I was psychic. My answer, short and sweet. 'yes'.

What did we learn from ghostbusters? If someone asks if you're a god..

Lately..

It's been forever since I've really written anything. Let's see where this takes us. I have no plan, I'm just going to write.

I find myself getting ideas for the remodeling in UO and heading over to do a brief installation or at least a note on my plan. I like the additions and I really think the UO Members do as well.

I was delivered a catalog in the mail by accident. In my evilness I kept it.

It's so cool. I will be spending money there.

Things You Never Knew Existed

I am teaching full time. Theory, Anatomy & Physiology, & Practical Application of Massage Therapy. My 3rd class just started. 4 out of 6 of my first class have already graduated.

I taught them well. They are good at what they do. I'm proud.

I had a dream. Please understand for the last 15 years I remember maybe 3-4 dreams a year. I'm sure I'm dreaming, I simply don't recall them. Doesn't really surprise me as I forget a lot of shit.

Anyway, this dream has been stuck in my head now for almost 4 weeks. I haven't had the dream again, I just can't shake the idea of having my own Massage School.

Sabastion's Jedi Acadamy of Massage Therapy or something..

The dream was about a 1200 hour course with a live on campus. Commune style with cabins. Common eating room, library, media room..

Tai Chi in the courtyard in the mornings..

20 students every 6 months. The course runs 1 year. Learn Swedish Massage, Hot Stone Therapies, Hydrotherapies, Reiki - through 3rd Level, Reflexology, Oriental Theory, Anatomy, Physiology, Theory, Ethics, CPR/BLS, Pre-natel, and different modalities added in as available.

Passing any national test will be a breeze compaired to my final.

~Snatch the pebble from my hand, Grasshopper.~

I distinctly recall the fact that we were getting job offers for students that haven't even started school yet.

It would be expensive though. I'm thinking $40,000. That includes everything. Room, board, books, tuition, and a grad package that would include a table. If I could manage accreditation I could offer student loans and pell grants.

Could be sweet.

Time for bed. It's a school night.

Leonardo
Leonardo
You are Leonardo. You are a natural born leader and very courageous. You are quick on your feet, clever, but also a bit impatient. Leonardo wears a blue mask and wields a pair of Katanas.
How do you compare?
